Overview: Surgical Scrub Procedure

Common Mistakes

  • Allowing hands to drop below elbow level during scrub or rinse
  • Inadequate scrub duration (less than 5 minutes total)
  • Missing web spaces between fingers
  • Incorrect scrub direction on forearms (elbow to wrist instead of wrist to elbow)
  • Using insufficient antimicrobial soap
  • Touching non-sterile surfaces after completing scrub

Critical Fail Steps

  • Failing to remove all jewelry before beginning scrub
  • Reusing nail brush after initial nail scrubbing
  • Touching face, mask, or any non-sterile surface with scrubbed hands
  • Allowing scrubbed hands to contact contaminated water from forearms
  • Using same end of sterile towel for both hands
