Common Mistakes
- Allowing hands to drop below elbow level during scrub or rinse
- Inadequate scrub duration (less than 5 minutes total)
- Missing web spaces between fingers
- Incorrect scrub direction on forearms (elbow to wrist instead of wrist to elbow)
- Using insufficient antimicrobial soap
- Touching non-sterile surfaces after completing scrub
Critical Fail Steps
- Failing to remove all jewelry before beginning scrub
- Reusing nail brush after initial nail scrubbing
- Touching face, mask, or any non-sterile surface with scrubbed hands
- Allowing scrubbed hands to contact contaminated water from forearms
- Using same end of sterile towel for both hands
